TAG Talk Tuesdays – Adam G/Nasir

Hey everyone! After the short one week (and a day late, apologies! -Mel) hiatus we are back! Today we are finishing up our interview with Adam Giles and learning a bit more about his character Nasir and a few other pieces of information you are sure to find interesting!
Adam’s let’s get right to it. What in the Pan-Dimentional Trade Consortium is Nasir?
While I have heard Nasir referred to as a genie in the past, he can only grant wishes to those with coin. He is actually a member of a planar merchant species called the Mercane. The idea of the Middle Eastern / Arabian motif which include with his look is not actually native to this species, but rather a stylistic choice showing he is a species from a distant land.
How were you able to find such unique items to fully embrace his culture along with the very recognizable verbiage and language structure?
I hope everyone loves his costume and I continue to add more to it next year! I’m very excited to show off the additions to it this year! Everything on his was put together a bit piecemeal – an item here and idea there – and eventually everyone’s favorite merchant Nasir! As for how he talks and his dialect choice, this was something I developed while playing a version of him in a Vampire: Dark Ages game with friends. I played a version of him in this game which allowed me to develop these things naturally. I always enjoyed adding flavor to my characters by language choice and adding accents. I’m quite pleased with how this one turned out.
As you should be! I have never been the best with accents and structuring my language uniquely as you do seemingly effortlessly so it is most impressive!
Continuing with Nasir, he is well established as a big merchant within the city, is it right to assume most of his motivations are purely the accumulation of wealth?
Sure, wealth is an aspect of his motivation, but this is absolutely NOT his main motivation. I don’t want to give away too much as I hope things are revealed naturally through game, but I will say he is a big planner with big ideas and plans. He simply wants people to think his only motivation is money. This works in his favor!
I guess one is Nasir’s main goals is don’t end up dead! Nasir tries to resolve all problems with words instead of violence as violence leads to death. And one this Nasir recognizes is that death is bad for business, and not only his own! One dead individual is one less potential customer.
A lot of talk last year was made about the exciting plot lines you ran, and you got the numerous good roleplayer rewards last year to prove it. Should we expect more of the same for exciting plots from you this year?
Of course I am always excited to run engaging short term and long term plotlines!
First, there will be a continuation of two of my major plot lines from that year that I am excited to delve more into this year! One of them, is the Rogue’s Gallery. A clandestine organization holds a yearly competition of sorts to find who is truly worthy of being a member of their secret organization. The competition will be unique every year, and the participants are asked to engage in secrecy so you won’t hear much about it In-Game, but based on comments made afterward, everyone enjoyed it.
My second plot line involves a paranormal investigation team that was sent to investigate some entity that appeared out the rift that seems extremely hostile and deadly. Eventually their investigation lead the players to their subject, but a formidable adversary he was. This encounter lead to the first player death In-Game when Deadward was struck down by this monster!
I heard a bit about this death! Seemed to be a huge moment. Do you have any additional commentary on this death? How was it received?
Oh Kyle is great! I knew with him being the first to die, he would find it more of an opportunity as opposed to a disappointment. Kyle has tried to instill this idea that death can be more interesting in living in certain situations and can create unique experiences for your character to help them grow you otherwise would not have! We shouldn’t see death as the end in this game and I am hopeful players use the Soulscar system to is fullest! I think this system is so unique and adds flavor to our game. The roleplaying opportunities alone are numerous and it should be embraced. We have to rid our old fears of dying in have we are used to! Even a full town wipe is an opportunity to create an amazing story! So I’m hopeful we can slowly change the cultural mind set of death in this game and we see them more regularly.
As you are a member of the board, you are uniquely qualified to explain where you hope to see the game go in the future. Please tell me some of your hopes for the future of Odyssey.
My main goal is to see the game grow and flourish. We had a strong first year, but I would love to see more players every year. When you get to 50-60 players an event, the world starts to feel more and more alive and lived in. We have done a great job trying to make the town feel like a alive with the numerous bazaars and shops, but to really get this sense we just need to keep recruiting more people! I think we have a very unique game here with a lot of opportunity for growth. Our rule system allows for a larger diversity of plot lines which I am hopeful encourages players to try out the game and stay engaged. I find it exciting that many of the most discussed happens of last year were either player driven plot – Grukkar’s ritual, Deadward’s surgery – or were moments that didn’t involve combat – the Magistrate election, the Rogue’s Gallery. I don’t think all rules encourage this style of play so seeing that this game does, I believe we will stand out from other games going forward!
Well that’s it for another edition of TAG Talk Tuesday! Next week we talk to another player that uses their voice over combat to resolve issues as we talk to Billy McGinnis and learn more about the bard Fenerio!
In this article we heard of Adam’s hopes to see the game grow exponentially with hopes of a player count reaching 50-60 or more in the future. We would love to hear some of the steps you are taking to ensure Adam’s vision comes to fruition! Please tell us your recruitment plans for this year in the comment section below!
